Woman Wednesday: Julia

Q and A with Julia from Stockholm, Sweden, now settled in San Francisco, CA

“It’s okay to take a rest sometimes! It makes you more productive.”

Q: What are you passionate about?

A: Passion is what drives me! I am super passionate about bringing spiritual awakening to people in a quick and easily digestible way. I found that by going through my awakening myself, especially my Saturn Return where I left everything in Sweden for the unknown in the U.S. I followed my heart and took a huge risk to come to the states. And once I got settled and started building my career in gaming, I realized something was missing. And that something was a consistent connection to my spirituality, but on my terms, in my time. I needed something fast to help me stay grounded and inspired. I started tinkering with a daily app filled with spiritual goodies and a daily ritual. This need to fill a hole in my own life gave birth to Saged!

Now, Saged is so much more than a daily app for spiritual expansion. We are building an entire universe to help people connect with and develop their spirituality. With physical goods, digital experiences, and the magic in the app, we are supporting people where they’re at and helping them get to where they want to be.

Q: What were your younger years like?

A: I was born and raised in Sweden, and until recently, I never realized the type of entrepreneurial spirit I was surrounded by in my family. I saw my family members work hard to make their dreams happen, however unconventional. This made a huge impact on me that I brought with me when I decided to move to the states to explore something bigger. It was during my Saturn Return that everything fell apart in Sweden and I left for the United States for an adventure and never came back. At the time, this made perfect sense and I was so driven to make a life for myself. Looking back, I am so proud of how brave I was to just pick up and move halfway across the world! I settled in San Francisco, got my MBA, and started a career as an executive in gaming. I did this for 20 years until Saged was born and everything changed again. Now, I am running the company of my dreams and helping people discover their power!

Q: What is something valuable you’d like others to know?

A: As a woman who worked in a high-powered position as an executive in the male-dominated gaming industry, the intuitive feminine perspective is so valuable. I recognized that I don’t work like my male counterparts who are expected to continuously be productive and creative. I work in creative bursts; it’s not something that is “on” all the time. I realized that I follow the cycles of the moon and work in a circular vs linear pattern. I am always inputting, but I am not always outputting. In our society, we are expected to always be working, always be producing, and always be creative. But when I gave myself permission to push back on that, even before I started my own company, I realized that I was in much more flow. The push, push, push that our culture and society values are not only exhausting, but it’s also unsustainable. It’s okay to take a rest sometimes! It makes you more productive.

Q: What does feminism mean to you?
A:
Being born in a feminist country, Sweden, feminism wasn’t something I ever had to fight for. It was an inherent right that I received at birth and saw in action as I grew up. I see feminism as equal rights for men and women. It’s that simple. In Sweden, feminism is less of a loaded word and it’s more like pro-rights, it’s our birthright. Witnessing the pursuit for women to have the same rights as men in everything in the states has made me realize that feminism transcends male and female, it’s just about the human right to equal access and equal opportunity.

MORE ABOUT JULIA: I always love a good adventure. As devoted as I am to my family and my company, I prioritize my well-being by taking time to fill my cup with spiritual adventures. I recently went on a 2-week trip to hike in Peru and unplug. I also take a huge step back during the summer to spend time with family and friends in Sweden and abroad. I love to travel and I have realized that when I make time for it, I am happier, more creative, have better boundaries, and have much less stress and anxiety. We are told in this society that rest and taking time off aren’t productive. But I see it as the exact opposite.

Woman Wednesday: Rozzi

Q and A with Rozzi, Oxford, United Kingdom

“Instead of complaining about what you don’t like, ask yourself: What do I want? What does that look like?”

Q: What are you passionate about?

A: I am very passionate about helping women shift away from the dieting world and empowering them to start working with their mind and body to create health and happiness in their lives and live in a body they love.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been fascinated by the human mind and how everything in our lives seems to be the result of our thoughts. What we think shapes our feelings and actions and, inevitably, the results and experiences we have. So, why not harness that inner power and learn to use it to support and propel us towards our goals?

One of my biggest joys is traveling and exploring new places. My backpacking dreams came true when my husband and I spent 5 months exploring Asia in our twenties. My favourite place in the world is Pokhara Lake in Nepal; it has lovely, genuine people and breathtaking views. One day I would love to take my children on a worldwide travel adventure.

I’m also a big fan of playing a little-known sport called pickleball (check it out; it’s so much fun!). I adore dogs, and I’d happily admit to being a board game geek! Oh, and recently something possessed me to sign up for a 100km 24-hour walking challenge, so most weekends I’m off on long hikes training for that!

Q: What were your younger years like?

A: I grew up in a seaside city called Varna in Bulgaria until I turned 13 when my family and I moved to live in the UK. Overall, I had a wonderful, carefree childhood in Bulgaria, filled with memories of playing with my friends on the streets outside and being free to ride my bike or play wherever we wanted. I still cherish the freedom that I had back then, which seems nearly impossible to replicate with my own children, as times have changed now.

Even as a young child, I always had an entrepreneurial streak bubbling under the surface, and I remember selling my grandparents’ watermelons in the summertime and making friendship bracelets and selling them to visiting tourists. From a young age, I loved the idea of doing my own thing, having my own business, and making my own way in the world. And running my own business now as a hypnotherapist and coach feels like a perfect blend of freedom, adventure, and the joy of helping others, all rolled into one!

Moving to the UK was a very formative experience for me, especially as I didn’t speak a word of English in the beginning. Learning to adapt to a new life here, something that seemed to be an insurmountable challenge at the time, has taught me to keep going and keep taking small steps in the right direction. Who could have guessed that the shy teenage me, who spent a year carrying a dictionary around at school, would now love writing in English?

Q: What is something valuable you’d like others to know?

A: Your mind truly holds the key to what you want in life. If you can just let go of the stories you keep telling yourself and practice keeping your focus on and moving in the direction of what you want, your life will change quicker than you can imagine.

For example, what if you stopped trying to lose weight and instead focused on creating health and wellness in your body? You would feel so different about the whole thing, and you’d naturally start taking different actions. You can do this with anything in your life.

Instead of complaining about what you don’t like, ask yourself: What do I want? What does that look like? How will I know I’ve achieved this? How would I feel? Who would I need to be, to have this? Just by asking yourself these questions, you’ll be amazed how quickly you’ll start getting ideas of what to do next to start moving you towards your goal. The key is in shifting your focus to what you WANT.

Q: What does feminism mean to you?
A:
To me, feminism means respect and freedom. Respect for women as equals, recognizing and valuing our individual strengths and what we can bring to the table, regardless of our gender. And freedom to express ourselves as women, be who we choose to be, and have the opportunities to do what we want to do without arbitrary limits, restrictions, or expectations based on our gender.

Woman Wednesday: Felissa

Q and A with Felissa, Atlanta, Georgia

“People will judge you, try to change you, try to break you, and even try to stop you. But that is all in the process of getting to the top!”

Q: What are you passionate about?

A: I wanted to have a career where I could give back to people in a real impactful way. I had always wanted to help others and make a difference. Although teaching in the classroom was something I loved, I never felt like I could create the life I desired. Six years ago, I was a tired, overweight mom of two with no energy.

I was always looking and doing the “next best diet” and as everyone knows, diets are not sustainable for life.  I finally decided it was time to educate myself on nutrition and health so I could create a healthy lifestyle for myself and my family. After losing 40 pounds and stopping being such a skeptic, I started sharing my success story with others. I partnered with a health and wellness company and a nutritionist and created a career that would inspire and empower people to live their best life through a journey of nutrition, wellness, and creating a healthy mind and body.

my before_after2

I was only looking to drop a few pounds and get my energy back, and what I found was a community of people with a vision that empowers others to do more than they thought they were capable of doing. As I continued to share my story: of the nutrition and our life-changing opportunity, to my surprise, by the end of that year, I surpassed my teaching income and decided to jump in with both feet (well, sort of).

Actually, when I let go of worrying about what other people thought of me, and was open to new opportunities and possibilities, and that was when my life changed. I cared too much about what other people thought of me, and it prevented me from doing the things I wanted to do or being who I truly was. This has given me a sense of achievement, purpose, and community and a profession where I can be my own BOSS. Every day, I have the opportunity to help people change their quality of life both physically and financially. That feels pretty amazing.

Q: What were your younger years like?

I had a wonderful childhood and was raised in a very loving home in Savannah, GA.  My parents always supported me and wanted me to enjoy every minute of life.  I graduated from the University of Georgia, where I received a bachelor’s degree in Audiology and Speech Pathology and then continued to Georgia State University, where I received my master’s degree in the Education of Deaf and Hard of Hearing.  I then taught grades kindergarten through fifth grade over the next 12 years.

family

During the last few years I was teaching, I began to realize I wanted more than just living for weekends and holidays. I found a way to plan my work and passion to help others around my life verses planning my life around my work—working days and hours that were best for me, with no cap on the amount of income I could earn.

Q: What is something valuable you’ve learned that you’d like others to know?

A: I learned very quickly that big dreams don’t come easily. People will judge you, try to change you, try to break you, and even try to stop you. But that is all in the process of getting to the top! Learning to get comfortable with the uncomfortable was an important lesson for me and not easy. All my life, I cared what others thought of me. Life is better when you’re not so concerned about how other people will view you for your actions, choices, and decisions.

on stage (1)

Sometimes you have to risk so much for a dream no one can see but you.  It became very apparent that I had to surround myself with people who supported me on my journey and would be there to lift me up when I fell (because I fell a lot). Whether it was the weight loss, the career change, or my new positive outlook on life, I had to stop feeling guilty about the decisions I made. I have had many challenges along the way. I could not make excuses anymore. It was time for results, and you can’t have both! If you take anything away from my story, I hope you will learn to be authentically, unapologetically you because it is your ultimate freedom and where joy is found.

Woman Wednesday: Leilani & The Little Things

“I wrote this book about the little things. These are the little things in life we look over day by day, although they are always there. These are the little things that got me through the storm. These are the little things I want to share with you to cheer you up when you need a friend or when you need a reminder or a little sprinkle of sunshine. If we learn to see the world differently, our days may be a little brighter.  If we learn to see the good, the world becomes a better place to live.” –Leilani Romero, author of “The Little Things

The holidays are right around the corner! Although it’s all very exciting, it can also be stressful. Sometimes, we just need to remind ourselves of the little things in life.

You may remember Leilani Romero from one of our first Woman Wednesdays! We invited her back to discuss her book (which is now published), the self-publishing process (how to publish a book), and what motivated her to create and publish this book called, “The Little Things.”

Also, we get to see a sneak peek inside her book that is exclusively being shown here (and here only)! Keep reading for more:

Q: What is “The Little Things“?

A: “The Little Things” is a collection of happy things in one book! It is a yellow pocket of all things good, and it is a reminder of happy. This little book will lift your spirits, brighten your day, cheer up your soul, and encourage kindness. With the power of positivity, the world can change… I believe, one smile at a time. Meditate on these things, and good will come.

Q: What is the self-publishing process like?

A: For those who have always wondered how the book publishing process works, it isn’t as difficult as it may seem! I have always said I wanted to publish one day, but I wasn’t sure how it would all go. Like all big projects, you have to take it one step at a time. Here are the steps that I have taken:

  1. Write and illustrate – Get all your ideas out there (the good and bad). As for illustrations, I created those by hand using watercolors and then scanned them in to digitize.

  1. Edit – Find a good editor who will understand your vision and trust the process. I am lucky enough to have an amazing brother (who is also a published writer) to edit my book!

  1. Find a printer – There are so many printers to choose from these days and not all force you to print in bulk. These days, some vendors will also handle the printing (ex. Amazon or Blurb)!

  1. Get an ISBN – Depending on the printer, this process might be included with the vendor, or you can independently purchase the ISBN on your own.

  1. Design the book by page and format – As a designer, I designed my own in Adobe In Design, but some printers can handle the PDF creation process for you!

  1. Print the darn thing!

  1. Launch on a jump-starting platform – I decided to have my 30-day campaign on Indiegogo, but there are quite a few others, such as Kickstarter!

  1. Apply to sell your book in stores, local shops, and online.

I hope this helps anyone who is interested in or considering the self-publishing route!

Q: Why did you write this book?

A: A few years back, I was seriously struggling in the world. With creativity comes frustration, self-criticism, and heartbreak. Behind all the glitter-covered castles I built, were often anxious times that included 3:00 AM tears pouring down (that hard work and dedication brought along with them). Without these, there would be no success, growth, or marvelous magic. Fittingly so, I created this book at the end of college, not only as a project but as a suitable end to an era. In life, there’s good little things and bad little things. And these can pile up. These good little things may be some that are taken for granted. Truth be told, in life, we never know what others are going through. I, for one, am a bubbly soul by nature, and because of this, I have often times felt the expectation or burden to always appear so. The reality is that we all have our good days and gray ones too. And that’s okay.

I wrote this book about the little things. This book is about the little things in life we look over day by day, although they are always there. These are the little things that got me through the storm. These are the little things I want to share with you. To cheer you up when you need a friend or when you need a reminder or a little sprinkle of sunshine. The good is so much bigger than the bad.

I took great care to hand paint and illustrate and write all 64 pages. 64 pages of beauty, 64 pages of good. These are pages created to promote mindfulness and good mental health. These pages are meant to remind you of the small parts of your day that can make a huge difference in your quality of life –the genuine and the wonderful. These pages, I created, with the purpose of making others happy.

If we learn to see the world differently, our days may be a little brighter.  If we learn to see the good, the world becomes a better place to live.

Q: What would you like others to learn from your story?

A: Our day-to-day lives are full of little things. Unfortunately, research and personal experience have shown that we tend to fixate on the negatives and brush small positivities to the side.

My goal when hand-painting and writing this 64-page book was to collect reminders of all the little soul-filling, uplifting, and encouraging moments – the little things – that we may take for granted. Whether you turn to any page or flip through over time, “The Little Things” makes the perfect bedside or coffee table book to pick up throughout the day. Once I have enough funding, I will be able to get this book into local stores and online shops (like Barnes & Noble). A successful first book will allow me to continue to write new books and pursue my dreams of illustration.
