Woman Wednesday: Daisy

Q and A with Daisy from Jakarta, Indonesia, living in Seattle, WA

If I don’t start now, I would never start.”

Q: What are you passionate about?

A: My passion is to support other women. Literally. Especially those who are changing careers and looking to be entrepreneurs or those who are reentering the workforce postpartum. I would love to get them where I am today by sharing my journey and guiding them there.

Q: What were your younger years like?

A: I have a master’s degree in counseling psychology. My family has always been made of hard-working people. They are my support system in terms of getting me where I am in my career today. My dad is my role model. Seeing him working really hard and tirelessly supporting me in my career journey is what gets me to where I am today and also the combination of that plus putting myself out there, stepping out of my comfort zone, and keeping on going no matter what life brings my way.

Q: What is something valuable you’d like others to know?

A: I always have this thought, “If I don’t start now, I would never start,” so I keep on going and feel the fear and do it anyway!

Q: What does feminism mean to you?

A: I was born and raised in Jakarta, Indonesia, where women are traditionally secondary to men, and advocacy for women is next to none. Feminism means advocacy for us, women to have equal opportunities, and freedom to choose which career or life path we want to have.

Woman Wednesday: Jess I.

Q and A with Jess from Jamaica, living in London, UK

“Use words to build, not break. They carry energy and are more powerful than we understand them to be.

Q: What are you passionate about?

A: I’m Jess, also known as Dreamz She Wrote. My passions are many, but predominantly, I care most for words and their use in creative spaces. I also love traveling, good food, and good music in any order. I’ve been writing from as young as I can recall; I’ve always been creating stories and poetry. As well as being a copywriter, I am also a spoken word artist. In another life, I taught high school, passing on my love for words and all the wonderful things they help us to create. I’m currently working on a collection of poetry NFT’s and looking forward to being the featured spoken word artist at a micro festival on healing the self through the arts.

Q: What were your younger years like?

A: As the eldest of five, spare time was in short supply. I used to relish being able to go and sneak off somewhere quiet, usually under a table and just write stories or color, which is something I still find therapeutic now. I was lucky enough to be introduced to travel at an early age and, above all, I’ll hold this as something sacred. There is an education that is afforded through travel that cannot be gained anywhere else. I feel like I’ve kept my childlike curiosity and excitement for meeting new people and learning new things because of my early travel adventures. One of my funniest memories is being in a chalet in Andorra on Christmas Day and having no other option than to slide down the icy road on our bums to get to the cabin at the bottom of the hill where dinner was being served. Of course, we were all wearing our salopettes, so no ice-burnt bottoms.

Q: What is something valuable you’d like others to know?

A: I feel it’s really important that no one tries to fit into anyone else’s idea of who they should be. I have always been the ‘quirky’ one; I like books and films and rarely watch TV. I have adult coloring books and turquoise hair and all of these things make me feel comfortably like myself and I think that is really important. Being comfortable with who you are and what you like is powerful.

Q: What does feminism mean to you?

A: Feminism, to me, is understanding how to comfortably be a woman in my own right, knowing that I have a special type of magic that may make others fearful. It means understanding that my femininity doesn’t have to be defined by anyone’s standards but my own and that as well as (and not despite) being a woman, I am also many other things.

MORE FROM JESS: If I could leave this world with anything valuable, I’d leave it with this: Use words to build, not break. They carry energy and are more powerful than we understand them to be.

Woman Wednesday: Annie

Q and A with Annie from Regina, Saskatchewan

“In all the work I’ve done with women, I’ve heard over and over that they didn’t know there was another option or that they had any choice in how they treat their symptoms or their hormones.

Q: What are you passionate about?

A: I’m most passionate about women’s health. I work as a naturopathic doctor, focusing primarily on women’s health. I also have an online program called the Symptom-Free Period System that teaches women how to naturally balance their hormones so they can live without period symptoms (or perimenopause or menopause symptoms) that is launching this month. I’m really lucky to have known I wanted to be a doctor since I was little. I think I started saying I wanted to be a doctor around age 6. I found naturopathic medicine on my own health journey when I was struggling with hormonal migraines and severe cramps with my period. For me, discovering naturopathic medicine was a lightbulb moment and really led to finding my true path.

Q: What were your younger years like?

A: I grew up in Regina, Saskatchewan. I’m lucky to have grown up with a close-knit family. My two older sisters and I all played competitive basketball, so a lot of my time was spent in a gym either playing or watching. I was always very interested in sports medicine and sports nutrition, and I became fascinated with the fact that the body can heal itself. That is probably where my love of science, anatomy, and medicine began.

Q: What is something valuable you’d like others to know?

A: I would like everyone to know that women shouldn’t be experiencing painful or life-disrupting symptoms with their menstrual cycle. In all the work I’ve done with women, I’ve heard over and over that they didn’t know there was another option or that they had any choice in how they treat their symptoms or their hormones. It’s my mission to help as many women as I can so that no women are left thinking that their body hates them or that they’re meant to be in pain every month.

Q: What does feminism mean to you?

A: Feminism is supporting equality for all human beings of all sexes.

Woman Wednesday: Cora

Q and A with Cora from
North, South Carolina, living in Lexington, South Carolina

“If you have the right people in your life, then you are richer than you know!”

Q: What are you passionate about?

A: I’m passionate about helping other women find their strength again. I know how hard it is to start over and I want to help women get back on their feet again. I also love to be outside, going on adventures of all kinds, listening to music and dancing. I’m as goofy as they come, but I’m a true, loving friend and a person who cares for everyone I meet.

My company is Coras Cleaning Solutions CCS LLC, and my mission statement for my company is to help other battered women get out of bad relationships that hurt them and be able to get back on their feet.

Q: What were your younger years like?

A: I modeled for Elite Modeling for 5 years. I was a wild child, always outside, always going on adventures, and always pushing buttons. My upbringing was the normal Christian kind: always have to behave, always use manners, etc. Even though I was the wild one, I am still respectful.

Q: What is something valuable you’d like others to know?

A: I want others to know that no matter how hard it is to walk away, you can walk away and find that strength again! I learned that no matter how hard life gets, if you have the right people in your life, then you are richer than you know! Speak your truth, tell your story, and reach out to those who need it the most! Always be kind.

Q: What does feminism mean to you?

A: I’m not much of a feminist, but I do believe that we are the strongest species when we find our truth and our calling! We have a voice and that needs to be heard. I think that when we have other supporting women in our life we can do anything together.

MORE ABOUT CORA: I’m a single mom of two beautiful sons who are my world. I got divorced four years ago, and it’s been a rough journey, but I know I will be ok! Even though I come from a rough past, I treat others how I want to be treated.
