Woman Wednesday: Markita

Q and A with Markita from Memphis, TN, living in Milwaukee, WI

“One of the most valuable things I learned is to unlearn to relearn.”

Q: What are you passionate about?

A: I am passionate about serving and helping others. I am currently the medical records director for a nursing facility. I have an online shoe boutique called Shoe Chic LLC. I am a certified life coach. I serve on the outreach team as the Council of Disciple for my church Greater New Birth. I am also the founder of Breaking Barriers for Women LLC. Breaking Barriers is my new project and it was birthed from my passion for serving others. Breaking Barriers was birthed during one of the hardest seasons of my life. I was sexually assaulted and had to face it head-on. I want women and young girls to know that if I survive, they can too. I wanted to give them ways and resources to heal from the trauma. Going through that caused me to write my first book. It is titled Breaking the Silence From Pain to Power. I am currently working on getting my voice out and sharing my survival story.

Q: What were your younger years like?

A: My younger years were good and bad. I have always been very smart in school, and education just comes naturally to me. I was spoiled and had all the material things, but I liked time with my parents. I think a lot of generational curses followed me into my adulthood, and it wasn’t until I went through sexual assault, which caused me to realize all the pain I buried away and pretended didn’t happen to me. I had to break those cycles and identify those triggers so that they are not passed down to my children.

Q: What is something valuable you’d like others to know?

A: One of the most valuable things I learned is to unlearn to relearn. I had to change my mindset and be ok to change. I would like others to learn just because something happens to you, doesn’t mean it identifies who you are or what you can become. You have the mindset to be willing to change and unlearn to relearn. Nothing is impossible. Please read the book to better understand.

Q: What does feminism mean to you?
A:
A voice of advocacy for women to express their beliefs. My entire brand Breaking Barriers for Women LLC stands for and represents feminism. Let your voice be heard and not silent.

Woman Wednesday: Cora

Q and A with Cora from
North, South Carolina, living in Lexington, South Carolina

“If you have the right people in your life, then you are richer than you know!”

Q: What are you passionate about?

A: I’m passionate about helping other women find their strength again. I know how hard it is to start over and I want to help women get back on their feet again. I also love to be outside, going on adventures of all kinds, listening to music and dancing. I’m as goofy as they come, but I’m a true, loving friend and a person who cares for everyone I meet.

My company is Coras Cleaning Solutions CCS LLC, and my mission statement for my company is to help other battered women get out of bad relationships that hurt them and be able to get back on their feet.

Q: What were your younger years like?

A: I modeled for Elite Modeling for 5 years. I was a wild child, always outside, always going on adventures, and always pushing buttons. My upbringing was the normal Christian kind: always have to behave, always use manners, etc. Even though I was the wild one, I am still respectful.

Q: What is something valuable you’d like others to know?

A: I want others to know that no matter how hard it is to walk away, you can walk away and find that strength again! I learned that no matter how hard life gets, if you have the right people in your life, then you are richer than you know! Speak your truth, tell your story, and reach out to those who need it the most! Always be kind.

Q: What does feminism mean to you?

A: I’m not much of a feminist, but I do believe that we are the strongest species when we find our truth and our calling! We have a voice and that needs to be heard. I think that when we have other supporting women in our life we can do anything together.

MORE ABOUT CORA: I’m a single mom of two beautiful sons who are my world. I got divorced four years ago, and it’s been a rough journey, but I know I will be ok! Even though I come from a rough past, I treat others how I want to be treated.
