Q and A with Shamara “Sugarbee” White from Prince George’s County, Maryland

“Confidence starts from within—when you truly believe in yourself, others will too.”

Q: What are you passionate about?

A: I am honored to be the 2024 Jr. Miss North America, a title I proudly won at the International Pageant in Orlando, Florida.

Cheerleading has been a huge part of my life since I was six years old, and I love the energy, teamwork, and spirit it brings. I am also a dedicated member of my church’s dance team, where I express my faith and minister to others through Praise Dance.

Beyond performing, I have a deep passion for giving back to my community. I am the Founder and CEO of Sugarbee Cares Foundation, an organization that promotes confidence, wellness, kindness, and service. Through our initiatives, we empower young people and make a positive impact.

I am also excited to participate in the Global Youth Day of Service, a special opportunity for young leaders like me to take action and inspire others to give back.

Q: What were your younger years like?

A: I grew up as the youngest of four siblings, with two older sisters and one older brother. Family has always been an important part of my life.

My dad is someone I truly admire. He is a highly respected executive in the nonprofit world and has dedicated his career to helping others. I often hear people talk about the impact he’s made, and it inspires me to continue his legacy of service. Even though he’s busy, he always makes time for our family, teaching me the importance of kindness, humility, and hard work.

My mom is an incredible woman. As a program manager, she’s constantly involved in community organizations, always finding ways to help people. She pushes me to be my best, supports me in everything I do, and is, hands down, the best cook—no one can top her meals!

Their dedication to service and leadership has shaped who I am today.

Q: What is something valuable you’d like others to know?

A: One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is the importance of believing in yourself.

When I was preparing for the international pageant in Florida, I tried different ways to present myself, but none of them felt right. It wasn’t until I embraced my true self that I realized the only way to stand out was by being authentic.

When answering questions, I could only give my answer—not someone else’s. And I had to be okay with that. Confidence starts from within—when you truly believe in yourself, others will too.

Q: What does feminism mean to you?

A: To me, feminism is about fairness and equality—making sure everyone is treated with respect, regardless of whether they are a boy or a girl.

It means speaking up when something isn’t right—like when girls aren’t taken as seriously as boys or when they’re treated differently just because of their gender.

I believe that I can do anything I set my mind to, and so can any girl. Feminism is about making sure everyone has that same opportunity.
