Woman Wednesday: L. Michelle

Q and A with L. Michelle, Southeast Missouri, USA

“I am not the smartest person in the room and, if I am, it’s time for me to change rooms.”

Q: What are you passionate about?

A: I have a number of passions. Studying herbs and their health benefits is my strongest passion. It is also part of my work as an herbalist and owner of my business, Aquarius Herbs and Teas, LLC. Music is also a huge part of my life. While I no longer sing, I love dancing and just vibing to the music of my past and to some new things. I am also rediscovering my love of books, mostly fantasy and romantic things.

Q: What were your younger years like?

A: My younger years were sort of bittersweet. I had amazing grandparents and aunts and uncles that I spent a great deal of time with. My mother raised me and my brother as a single mom, and my father was sort of typical ’70s dad; he was around us when we were with our grandma but pretty much on the fringe of my life until I got older. I don’t blame him. He wasn’t really good at being the father of a small child, but he was actually awesome when I got older. He taught me so much about history, life, how this country works, and so on. He didn’t care for my independent streak as he was old fashioned as can be, but I think in his way he sort of was glad I was like I was because he knew I would be able to help myself. My mother and I had a tough relationship and honestly, we have just now, at 47 and 69, been able to really communicate with each other. We both had to go through our own journeys of discovery to understand and appreciate each other for what we are now, and we understand that I will forever be her daughter, and she will forever be my mother, and all that mess that comes with that. [She laughs.] We do our best to laugh at things that once angered us.

Q: What is something valuable you’d like others to know?

A: The most valuable lesson I have learned is to listen. I am not the smartest person in the room and if I am, it’s time for me to change rooms. I am forever a learner. I want to be a student because as I get older I understand that what I once knew may not be in line with the times. That’s not to say I have to forget anything I know, but it does mean that the younger people may have something to share and to teach me, and I always want to be receptive to that. I have also learned that it’s okay to fail. Yes, it hurts. Yes, it’s frustrating and may even be embarrassing. But there is a lesson in failure. Study the lesson, get it, and get it good. Then go out and fail some more until you get it right. And you will get it right.

Q: What does feminism mean to you?
A:
I have a love-hate relationship with feminism lately. I was brought up to see Gloria Steinem as the leader of the movement. So, I always thought she had black and brown women’s interests in mind. It was later that I learned the opposite to be true. So, that word currently makes me angry. I wanted to be a feminist. But in truth, I always have been. It means that we as women not only look out for each other in all things, but we also tell each other hard truths and hold each other accountable. I think that when the rest of the movement decides to hold the old guard accountable, I think the word would regain a sweeter meaning for me.

MORE ABOUT L. MICHELLE: I love that I was even considered for this blog post. I feel humble that someone would want to ask me questions. I wanted to write for a blog at one time, because I love telling the stories of others as well as my own. I’m currently living in Southeast Missouri in a rather small town, and I work from home on my Etsy business. I also have a small daycare in my home. We make it our mission to educate and inform our babies and their moms on all sorts of resources and opportunities available to them. One of the mommies said we were more helpful than Social Services. [She laughs.] But I love it. I love helping.

Woman Wednesday: Shanita

Q and A with Shanita from Brooklyn, New York

“I went to high school and some college, but I have learned so much from educating myself online.”

Q: What are you passionate about?

A: My name is Shanita Smith, and I love video games, movies, anime, and my business (which is my hobby as well). I’m a full-time caregiver, plus I do affiliate marketing on the side. I found out about working from home over ten years ago when I use to surf online and I just came across this pop-up that showed up a lot on Myspace and Craigslist (when both were super popular back then), and I have been hooked since.  I’m currently working on building my business by making residual income every single month!

Q: What were your younger years like?

A: My upbringing, up until my teenage years, was nice and carefree. After that, it was always a challenge with my family, and I had my brother to rely on to get through the tough times.

Q: What is something valuable you’d like others to know?

A: I went to high school and some college, but I have learned so much from educating myself online. My activities are always surfing the net, connecting with other business owners, and just learning something new! You can learn a lot on your own and by meeting other people.

Q: What does feminism mean to you?
A:
I believe that feminism means women’s empowerment.

Woman Wednesday: Melanie

Q and A with Melanie, Cape Town, South Africa

“Given the time and the right circumstance, it will be uncovered.”

Q: What are you passionate about?

A: My name is Melanie Rutgers, and I am from Cape Town, South Africa. I love creating things as well as opportunities and experiences that influence and effect change for whomever that change is for at that moment hoping that it will have a lasting impact.

The current space I am in is women transitioning into menopause and midlife, creating platforms and events where they become empowered with information to go through the transition a lot easier and safer based on several factors.

I am very passionate about the work that I am currently busy with because I had a horrible experience during my transition and struggled to understand and manage it as I discovered that there was very little information about women going through this phase of their lives. Among other things, I am an educational and training development practitioner, which simply means that I am qualified to facilitate information for educational purposes.

Q: What were your younger years like?

A: I am college educated and have post-grad studies in business strategy and organizational development. I had a good middle-class upbringing and always got into trouble for asking way too many questions! I found that I had a passion to create from very early in my life and that I could use my voice to make a difference. I was always creating opportunities and experiences and events in our neighborhood and community and had a large variety of friends, much to my parent’s distress at times. [She laughs.]

The biggest lesson that I have learned about my story so far is that in one’s pursuit of finding more whatever that more is, not always make impulsive decisions as you get older; some things need careful thought and planning because they can have severe consequences on those closest to you. Always be teachable.

Q: What is something valuable you’d like others to know?

A: Let me just say that it costs you if you become anything close to what is now coined as a solopreneur. You have to believe that what you are doing is your life’s work! So, we are currently fundraising to televise an event where we can take information to women who don’t have access to quality health care in our country, on a much larger scale than we have been doing so they can also be well and a lot more informed but most importantly, to know that they are not alone.

Q: What does feminism mean to you?
A:
Let me start by saying kudos to every woman who has ever fought for women’s rights and even went as far as changing legislation so that our voices could be heard; however, as far as feminism goes, in my opinion, it does not always need to be a fight to prove that we are worthy and capable in any one particular way or another because there is nothing to compete against. Women possess uniqueness, power, class, and strength that is unprecedented. Firstly, it is divine and very well-thought-out because we can create, influence, and maintain excellent multitasking power that no other creature on this planet has been blessed with! And those who seem not to possess what I am talking about, know that it exists, it’s there beneath what appears as brokenness; given the time and the right circumstance, it will be uncovered.

PS-I forgot to mention that I have recently just completed my first season as a talk show host and producer. This is me in the center with my two guests and two of the crew.

Woman Wednesday: Karen W.

Q and A with Karen, Portsmouth, United Kingdom

“We all have so much knowledge, wisdom, and our own personal story, so why wouldn’t you want to use your learning to change the lives of others?”

Q: What are you passionate about?

A: I’m passionate about business and books. I started out in business in 2006 and haven’t looked back. It’s been a rollercoaster ride and I found my passion in 2014 when I started supporting business owners to write their bestselling and business building books. I wrote my first book in 2009 and have just published my ninth (currently available as a digital book only–paperback to follow)! It was my success that drove others to seek my support in this area. And I love it when a client says to me “this is what I wrote!” when they have their book in their hands for the first time. And it’s great to see all the success that can come off the back of having a book when you do it well. You can find out more about my new book at www.the7shifts.com.

Q: What were your younger years like?

A: I was a shy child, introverted and–probably not surprisingly, looking back–I loved books. I had a pretty normal childhood, an only child with two loving parents, and my life has been impacted more by my adult years. My dad died nine years ago and, around the same time, I decided to embrace every opportunity in life, which led me to becoming a firewalk instructor, doing a parachute jump and taking up skiing in my late thirties.

Q: What is something valuable you’d like others to know?

A: I initially trained to be a coach in 2006 and then did my NLP qualifications to master practitioner level. Naively, I wanted to change the world but soon realised I could only do this one person at a time. Now as The Book Mentor, I can change the world of thousands of people by supporting my authors to get their books out of their head and into the hands of those who need to read them. We all have so much knowledge, wisdom and our own personal story, so why wouldn’t you want to use your learning to change the lives of others? Especially when you can help them to avoid pain or give them short cuts to success.

Q: What does feminism mean to you?
A:
I’m not a feminist and I love working with all my clients—men and women. However, more often or not, the people who get in their own way are the ladies I work with. So, it’s wonderful when they realise the power of what they know and they are propelled to step up and make a bigger difference.

MORE ABOUT KAREN: I’m from Portsmouth in the UK, although I work with coaches, business experts, and thought leaders all around the world. I love to travel with my husband, value new experiences, and appreciate the opportunity to share my knowledge and experiences with others. Check out my website at www.librotas.com.

Woman Wednesday: Julia

Q and A with Julia from Stockholm, Sweden, now settled in San Francisco, CA

“It’s okay to take a rest sometimes! It makes you more productive.”

Q: What are you passionate about?

A: Passion is what drives me! I am super passionate about bringing spiritual awakening to people in a quick and easily digestible way. I found that by going through my awakening myself, especially my Saturn Return where I left everything in Sweden for the unknown in the U.S. I followed my heart and took a huge risk to come to the states. And once I got settled and started building my career in gaming, I realized something was missing. And that something was a consistent connection to my spirituality, but on my terms, in my time. I needed something fast to help me stay grounded and inspired. I started tinkering with a daily app filled with spiritual goodies and a daily ritual. This need to fill a hole in my own life gave birth to Saged!

Now, Saged is so much more than a daily app for spiritual expansion. We are building an entire universe to help people connect with and develop their spirituality. With physical goods, digital experiences, and the magic in the app, we are supporting people where they’re at and helping them get to where they want to be.

Q: What were your younger years like?

A: I was born and raised in Sweden, and until recently, I never realized the type of entrepreneurial spirit I was surrounded by in my family. I saw my family members work hard to make their dreams happen, however unconventional. This made a huge impact on me that I brought with me when I decided to move to the states to explore something bigger. It was during my Saturn Return that everything fell apart in Sweden and I left for the United States for an adventure and never came back. At the time, this made perfect sense and I was so driven to make a life for myself. Looking back, I am so proud of how brave I was to just pick up and move halfway across the world! I settled in San Francisco, got my MBA, and started a career as an executive in gaming. I did this for 20 years until Saged was born and everything changed again. Now, I am running the company of my dreams and helping people discover their power!

Q: What is something valuable you’d like others to know?

A: As a woman who worked in a high-powered position as an executive in the male-dominated gaming industry, the intuitive feminine perspective is so valuable. I recognized that I don’t work like my male counterparts who are expected to continuously be productive and creative. I work in creative bursts; it’s not something that is “on” all the time. I realized that I follow the cycles of the moon and work in a circular vs linear pattern. I am always inputting, but I am not always outputting. In our society, we are expected to always be working, always be producing, and always be creative. But when I gave myself permission to push back on that, even before I started my own company, I realized that I was in much more flow. The push, push, push that our culture and society values are not only exhausting, but it’s also unsustainable. It’s okay to take a rest sometimes! It makes you more productive.

Q: What does feminism mean to you?
A:
Being born in a feminist country, Sweden, feminism wasn’t something I ever had to fight for. It was an inherent right that I received at birth and saw in action as I grew up. I see feminism as equal rights for men and women. It’s that simple. In Sweden, feminism is less of a loaded word and it’s more like pro-rights, it’s our birthright. Witnessing the pursuit for women to have the same rights as men in everything in the states has made me realize that feminism transcends male and female, it’s just about the human right to equal access and equal opportunity.

MORE ABOUT JULIA: I always love a good adventure. As devoted as I am to my family and my company, I prioritize my well-being by taking time to fill my cup with spiritual adventures. I recently went on a 2-week trip to hike in Peru and unplug. I also take a huge step back during the summer to spend time with family and friends in Sweden and abroad. I love to travel and I have realized that when I make time for it, I am happier, more creative, have better boundaries, and have much less stress and anxiety. We are told in this society that rest and taking time off aren’t productive. But I see it as the exact opposite.
